Hugh of Vermandois

Hugh of Vermandois
Brother of French king Philip I; participant in the First Crusade (q.v.). Shipwrecked near Dyrrachion (q.v.) in 1096, he was escorted to Constantinople (q.v.) by agents of Alexios I Komnenos (q.v.) to whom he swore an oath of fealty. Alexios then used him to obtain the same oath from Godfrey of Bouillon (q.v.). After the conquest of Antioch (q.v.) Hugh was sent on a mission to Alexios I, after which he returned to France (q.v.).
